Why backpacks dominate
A loaded diaper bag weighs 3–5 kg (7–11 lb), and you carry it while also carrying a baby, a car seat, or both. A backpack puts that across both shoulders and leaves your hands free. Tote and crossbody bags look better and are genuinely easier to reach into one-handed, but they load one shoulder and slide forward every time you bend down — which, with a newborn, is constantly.

What size diaper bag do I need for a newborn?

Backpack or tote?

If you formula-feed or carry expressed milk, yes — they hold temperature for a few hours. If you breastfeed exclusively and only carry water, it matters much less.

Most parents use one heavily for around 18 months to two years, then move to a normal backpack. That argues for a mid-price bag that survives daily use, rather than the cheapest or the most expensive.
Can two parents share one bag?
